How to Avoid Food Additive Cocktails That Can Increase Risk of Diabetes
Apr 25, 2025
The Wall Street Journal shared a study that found evidence consuming certain combinations of common food emulsifiers, colors, and sweeteners may be associated with a higher risk of Type 2 diabetes. Researchers say while one of these ingredients in small amounts could be OK, the combination of them and frequency of consumption can potentially create stacked negative effects.
For now, it’s up to the shopper to parse out the ingredient label if they want to avoid these harmful combinations of emulsifiers, artificial colors, and artificial preservatives. The WISEcode™ app provides an easy solution and instantly identifies ingredients in your food that you want to avoid.
Unfortunately for us, ultra-processed foods often contain multiple artificial ingredients and account for 29% of packaged US foods - almost a 1-in-3 chance to unknowingly consume a “cocktail of additives”. Researchers like Mathilde Touvier, Research Director of the National Institute of Health in France, recommend avoiding ultra-processed foods as much as you can, or choosing foods with fewer additives (if not any).
